Christine Wiseman, will provide an overview of the Georgia Archives Institute (GAI). Established in 1967 as basic training for staff of the Georgia Archives, the Institute is now a separate non-profit organization that has provided instruction to hundreds of individuals working in archives and libraries in Georgia, the United States and beyond. Providing introductory training in archival practice, the Institute spans two weeks every June in Atlanta where 20 students participate in 48 hours of classroom instruction, a two day internship and at Atlanta area institution and opportunities for institutional tours and networking. In 2016, the GAI board was honored to receive the Society of American Archivists Award of Distinction. Jodie Foley, State Archivist for Montana, will discuss Montana’s use of the Student Archivist program to provide real-world experience to graduate students while giving local heritage organizations much needed professional archival training.
